Xiaomi’s Redmi series have been quite successful in capturing the entire budget and mid-range categories. They just keep releasing great phones and top it off, they constantly replace their older models with refreshed ones that just grabs everyone’s attention.
Take the Redmi 7A as an example. 3 months ago, it was one of the most hyped devices in the lower budget section. And just when its hype was slowly fading away with the launch of their flagship alternatives, Xiaomi has launched a successor which fits perfectly in this scenario.
Meet the Xiaomi Redmi 8A. A lowly budget phone with entry mid-ranger specifications. I was just going through the specifications wondering how different is this phone from their previous iteration. And turns out there are some significant changes that are worth looking into. So, let’s get started.
Xiaomi Redmi 8A Specifications
It seems Xiaomi has brought upgrades from the very ground level. The external design is completely new with the replacement of a forehead by a water-drop notch. The chin however is of the same size and still has the “Redmi” logo which is kind of annoying for me.
In terms of display, they’ve just increased the screen size. The display has been moved up to 6.2” with the same HD resolution display but with a greater screen to body ratio of 81.3%. The display is protected by a Gorilla Glass 5 which is quite nice to see.

Underneath, at the device’s core is an Octa-Core Snapdragon 439 processor coupled with 2/3GB RAM alongside 32GB storage. The processor is the same as the previous iteration however, it is slightly underclocked at 1.95Ghz but shouldn’t be much of a deal. Obviously, the device comes with MIUI 10 on top of Android 9. Surely, it will be getting an upgrade to MIUI 11 but you may have to wait a while.
One of the most notable feature of the Redmi 8A is the gigantic 5000mAh. A 1000mAh improvement than its predecessor gives it a huge advantage which makes it one of the most appealing devices in the lower budget section. If you do manage to drain this behemoth-sized battery, the 18W fast charger is here for your support.
One last significant update is the replacement of microUSB by USB type C. It still maintains the 3.5mm headphone jack which is quite nice. And is also P2i Splash resistant which is definitely good to hear.
Unfortunately, other features of the device are exactly the same. The rear has the same 12MP sensor and the fingerprint sensor is missing though there’s a replacement AI face unlock.
Redmi 8A Price in Nepal and Impression
Before moving on the impressions, know that this phone has just been launched in India for INR 6,499 for the base variant. The phone should be available in Nepal soon and as far as pricings are concerned, we don’t know yet. But I predict the Redmi 8A price in Nepal might be around Rs 11,000.
Finally, about the impressions, I believe that the Redmi 8A has some significant changes that makes it a lot better than the Redmi 7A. Upgraded screen, a gigantic battery life and USB type C are quite significant updates. I’m especially impressed by the inclusion of 5000mAh battery life in a phone at its price.
All in all, I believe that the phone is quite suited for a phone under Rs 11,000. For more comparisons, I’d need the actual device to be present. So, we will update you more on the device once it comes to Nepal.
