Edit-a-thon is an event where the editors of online communities work together in order to build the content on Wikipedia. According to the survey conducted by the Wikimedia Foundation, more than 90 percent of the editors are male. Therefore, to increase the participation of women, Nepali Wikipedian Committee has taken an initiative by organizing Wiki Women Edit-a-thon 2017. It has been going on since March 8 and will end on March 22.
The organizers of the event are Punyaswori Prajapati, Saroj Uprety, and Prabina Karki.
The objectives of conducting this event are to encourage more female editors, more Wikipedia articles on women and to promote Nepali Wikipedia among Nepali people as a new common education resource.
The exact steps to participate in the competition are listed out on the official wiki. Anyone living anywhere can participate in the event; there’s no restriction as such. As it’s a competition, the first three people who write or edit the maximum number of articles will be considered the winners and will be rewarded. According to the organizers, all the participants will be provided with certificates. Note that, only the articles submitted by March 22, 2017 will be considered for the competition.
