Smart #3 in Nepal: What Happens When German Engineering Meets Chinese Craft?

Smart #3 is launching soon in Nepal.

CG Motors, the official distributor for Smart Automobile, will introduce the Smart #3 to the Nepali EV market.

Smart Automobile is a joint-venture between Mercedes-Benz AG and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group sharing a 50% stake each.

The #3, like most of the Smart models are designed and engineered by Mercedes while the manufacturing part takes place in China.

Smart #3 is made on the Sustainable Experience Architecture (SEA) platform made by Geely. It is the world’s first open-source platform which has the ability to support a wide range of vehicle types.

What is the Price of Smart #3 in Nepal?

Smart #3 price in Nepal is not disclosed yet. Currently, we are awaiting the official launch of the #3.

However, up until now there has been no confirmation about the launch but we have been told by CG Motors official that #3 will be soon available in Nepal.

The #3 is available internationally in four different variants: Pro, Pro+, Premium, and Brabus.

These variants differ in motor and battery capacity, with the Pro serving as the introductory model and the Brabus designed for performance enthusiasts.

We anticipate that Nepal will likely receive the Pro, Pro+, and Premium variants, as they are the most suitable for the local market and have the potential to significantly disrupt the competitive EV market in Nepal.

Smart #3 Overview

Design

Mercedes designed and engineered the Smart #3, earning it the prestigious iF Design Award and the Red Dot Award.

At the front, all elements flow together in a cohesive rhythm. The lighting elements stretch across the width of the car, with LED headlamps connected by a slim LED DRL strip.

The grille, located on the lower part, also features air intakes. The overall front design remains neat and minimalistic, creating a clean aesthetic.

The Smart #3 sits on a long wheelbase with a sleek coupe silhouette.

All variants come with 19-inch alloy wheels, which incorporate smooth components to enhance the car’s aerodynamics. The two-tone roof adds a distinctive touch to the vehicle’s appearance.

At the rear, the design closely resembles that of a Mercedes, a nod to its Mercedes heritage.

A full-width light bar mirrors the front design, and a large rear window further accentuates the car’s sleek look.

Inside, the cockpit exudes a premium feel.

The dashboard, crafted from contrast-colored plastic, houses a 12.8-inch infotainment screen. Ergonomically positioned high-backed bucket seats allow the driver to stay close to the central screen.

The three-spoke steering wheel features physical controls, and a 9.2-inch Instrument Cluster sits just behind it. Furthermore, the car also features a 10-inch Head-Up Display. 

Additionally, the Panoramic Sunroof floods the cabin with natural light, while the 13-Speaker Beats Sound System delivers an immersive audio experience.

Performance

Smart #3 will be offered across three variants that are all powered by a 200 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor(PMSM). It generates a max power of 272 PS and a max torque of 343 Nm.

However, the Pro variant is supported by a 49 kWh LFP battery that is good for 325 Km range (WLTP). The charging time from 0 to 100% for this variant is around 7 hours with a 7.2 kW AC Charger.

On the other hand, the Pro+ and Premium variants are supported by a 66 kWh LFP battery that provides 435 Km range (WLTP). And the charging time for these variants is around 10 hours with a 7.2 kW AC Charger.

All variants are able to charge from 10% to 80% in under 30 minutes with a 150 kW DC Charger. 

Furthermore, all the variants of #3 are capable of reaching a top speed of 180 Km/h and 0-100 Km/h in 5.8 seconds.

In addition to these variants, there is also a “Brabus” model, which is focused on performance. It features all-wheel drive and a total motor output of 315 kW. But sadly, it won’t be coming to Nepal anytime soon.

This version can reach a top speed of 180 km/h and accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.7 seconds.

Additional Features

Front McPherson and Rear Multi-link handle the suspension duties.

The dimensions are 4400 mm in length, 1844 mm in width, and 1566 mm in height. Moreover, the wheelbase is 2750 mm.

The ground clearance is 160 mm. And, the kerb weight is 1780 Kg for the Pro Variant while Pro+ weighs at 1810 Kg and Premium at 1910 Kg.

It includes boot space is 370 liters expandable up to 1160 liters.

Smart #3 price in Nepal is not disclosed yet.

Sadly, we will have to wait for the official launch to know about the #3’s price in Nepal. Adding more to this dismay, #3 will not be seen in the NADA 2024 either.

But, the CG Motors official have assured us that they will soon launch the Smart #3 for the Nepali EV market.

In terms of performance, the BYD Seal Premium leads with its more powerful 230 kW motor and larger 82.5 kWh battery, compared to the Smart #3’s 200 kW motor and 66 kWh battery.

The Smart #3 could significantly impact the market if it is priced competitively, especially given the BYD Seal Premium’s current price of Rs. 1.39 Crores, which sets a high standard.
