All oil tankers must now have a security locking system mandated by the Nepal Oil Corporation (NOC), reports The Kathmandu Post.
With this move, the NOC aims to control theft and leakage in transit between Nepal and India.
The Details:
- It has been over a year since the government had directed fuel transporters to install high tech security locking system in their vehicles.
- A total of 140 tankers at Indian Oil Corporation’s (IOC) Siliguri depot were equipped with the security system on Wednesday.
- NOC plans to install the security locking system on IOC’s Gonda and Banthara depots in the next two weeks. It will also install the system in tankers leaving Raxaul depot next month.
- Within the next three months, the system will be installed on all tankers used for importing fuel.
- From then onwards, any tanker without the system will have its owner’s license scrapped.
Why it matters:
- These systems are designed to meet all the safety measure that is being implemented by IOC in India.
- The master keys for the system will be held by NOC and IOC depots so that it can only be locked and unlocked at the two depots.
- Each system costs Rs. 25,000. IOC is providing 2,300 locks free of cost to Nepal.
