Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Overview

Galaxy AI

The Galaxy AI is a new step by Samsung towards AI integration with its mobile phones, starting with the Galaxy S24 series. There are five major AI features that you must know about – Circle to Search, Live Translate, Note Assist, Generative Edit, and Chat Assist.

As the name suggests, the Circle to Search does a Google reverse image search on anything that you circle on the screen with your S-pen or your finger in a video or image regardless. Similarly, Live Translate allows live language translation over a call or text.

The Note Assist is an AI summarizer that summarizes the text and also formats your notes into a clear, easy-to-review summary. Likewise, the Generative Edit is an image editor function that allows relocating objects and generative AI to fill up the space created. Lastly, Chat Assist provides suggested text message replies on the keyboard itself, based on the chat contexts.

Design

Samsung provides a titanium frame on the Ultra as the iPhone 15 Pro series does. The Ultra still has the same angular corners and sharp edges as before. The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has a flat display instead of the previous year’s curved screen on the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

A high-end flagship phone would not be complete without a premium glass back, this is a Corning Gorilla Glass Armor, the toughest, most scratch-resistant, and most optically advanced Gorilla Glass in production as claimed by Corning, as of January 2024.

Design

The overall looks of the phone are similar to its predecessors: a minimalistic design without any camera island but individual camera cutouts. Lastly, the phone is IP68-rated and still holds an S-pen inside the body.

Display

The display of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is protected by the Corning Gorilla Glass Armor, as mentioned in our design segment. The 6.8-inch screen has a QHD+ resolution with an LTPO AMOLED 2X panel with a dynamic 1-120Hz screen refresh rate.

With LTPO technology, the phone intelligently switches its refresh rate as per the content being displayed to provide a smoother visual experience and also save battery with a low refresh rate when possible.

The screen is no longer curved at the edges and is brighter at 2600 nits peak brightness as compared to 1750 nits on the S23 Ultra.

Hardware

Samsung partnered with Qualcomm to bring the most advanced Snapdragon Mobile Platform chipset yet, Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 for Galaxy. The “for Galaxy” version of the Qualcomm chipset ships with a custom tweak similar to the S23 Ultra. The Adreno 750 GPU on the phone features improved ray tracing for enhanced gameplay visuals.

Samsung has also increased the surface area of the vapor chamber in the thermal control system by 1.9 times to maximize performance and improve cooling. The phone arrives with 12GB RAM, with storage options of 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB UFS 4.0.

Camera

The S24 Ultra ships with a 200MP main camera, a 50MP and 10MP telephoto camera, and a 12MP ultrawide lens. The main camera and the telephoto lens have IOS for stabilization. Samsung has changed the telephoto lens to provide 5x optical zoom with the 50MP camera and 3x optical zoom with the 10MP lens.

In addition, the phone has a 12MP front camera that can shoot videos in 4K at 60fps. While the main camera can shoot videos in up to 8K at 24/30fps and 1080p at 960fps.

One new feature is Samsung’s “ProVisual Engine,” which in Samsung’s words, is a suite of AI-powered tools to transform image-capturing abilities. With 1.6x larger pixels and a wider Tele OIS, the phone is claimed to have some incredible night zoom capabilities.

Battery and OS

The battery capacity on the S24 Ultra remains the same as in the previous Ultra carrying a 5,000mAh battery with the same 45W max charging speed. Furthermore, it also supports 15W Qi wireless technology and 4.5W reverse wireless charging technology as in the past. This is a bit of a letdown from Samsung as all major smartphone brands are competing to beat each other’s superfast charging speeds.

On a positive note, this year Samsung broke its past trends of providing software updates as this phone will be getting 7 years of security updates and 7 generations of OS upgrades. The phone ships with the latest Android 14 and OneUI 6.1 out-of-the-box.

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra Price in Nepal and Availability

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra looks similar to the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra look wise but the phone is more robust, more powerful, and features a brighter screen than its predecessor. Also, the Galaxy AI brings some useful features such as Circle to Search, Live Translate, Note Assist, Generative Edit, and Chat Assist to this phone.

Regardless, Samsung could’ve brought changes to its charging capacity. As more and more phones feature a higher charging speed on their phones, the Ultra might struggle to compete with them in this department.
