Purple PBS-001 Review
Design
- 100 x 45.5 mm
- 240 g
Purple PBS-001 has a half-spherical body made of plastic. It measures 100 x 45.5 mm and weighs around 240 g. The PBS-001 is pretty portable and doesn’t take up much space in your backpack.
When placed on a table, the speaker unit faces upward against the speaker grille. The speaker grille has a mesh pattern and is made out of plastic. The plastic grille has some flex to it but feels solid.
The circular side frame looks like metal but it is made of high-quality plastic. The lanyard is attached to the side frame which can be used to attach the speaker on to the backpack.
The bottom base is also made out of the same quality plastic as the side frame. The rubberized buttons are placed on the bottom base which is a very weird design choice. It does help the speaker achieve a clean look but you have to pick up the speaker to use the buttons which is not practical.
For charging, there is a USB-type C port flanked by two LED indicators. The overall design of the speaker is quite good but I do not like the button placement.

Connection
- Bluetooth 5.0
The Purple PBS-001 uses Bluetooth 5.0 for Bluetooth connection. So, it gets a standard range of 10m under optimal conditions. We did notice a slight drop in connection when there was an obstacle in between, like a wall.
I did not notice any flaws in the connection. However, you can only connect the speaker to a single device at a time. So, there’s no multipoint support.
But, it can be connected to another Purple speaker. With this, you can connect the phone to a single speaker but play music via both speakers. The second speaker will play the same music as the main speaker. Purple calls this TWS feature.
Sound & Mic
- Single Unit
- 5W Speaker
Purple PBS-001 has a single 5W speaker that faces upward when placed on a tabletop. For a portable speaker, it is loud enough to fill a small room. Plus, it doesn’t sound cranky at max volume.
It doesn’t have a bass-heavy profile, rather it has a low bass due to its speaker size. Highs are not clear, mids are decent and the vocals are clear. However, the sound stage could have been wider.
For the price, the sound quality is pretty good but I would have liked a brighter and warmer tone.
It also has a built-in mic for phone calls, you can accept or reject voice calls via the speaker itself. In our testing, the audio was loud at our end but the call receiver was not able to hear our voice clearly.

Battery
- 800mAh battery
This portable speaker has an 800mAh battery that provides music playback of 4.5 hours at 70% volume. For the size, the battery life is only decent.
Likewise, it takes 3 hours to fully charge its battery from 0 to 100%.
Should You Buy the Purple PBS-001?
Purple PBS-001 is a good portable speaker for the price. It has nice sound quality given the price and it is very easy to carry around.
It is not perfect though, it does miss out on IP rating and aux cable support. But, it is a good speaker for the price.
