Micromax entered the mobile telephones market in 2008 and their Canvas series smartphones are admired in the Nepali market. They have been broadening their Canvas series by introducing smartphones with mid-end specs at low prices. Addition to this series is the all new Micromax Canvas 6. It launched in Nepal in April 2016 and is available for a price of Rs. 23,685. But given the recent rise of Chinese smartphones. Is it the right choice?
For the given price, specification are pretty decent. Most of the budget flagship phones have a similar build, chipset, processor, display, GPU, and camera or even better for the similar price. And for the first time, Micromax has included a fingerprint sensor on its smartphone though it seems, they are a bit late to the party.
Key Specifications
- Display- 5.50-inch
- Processor- 1.3GHz Mediatek MT6795 Helio X10
- Screen Resolution- 1080×1920 pixels
- RAM- 3GB
- OS- Android 5.1
- Storage- 32GB
- Rear Camera- 13-megapixel
- Front Camera- 8-megapixel
- Battery Capacity- 3000mAh
The biggest and the closest competitors for the Canvas 6, in the Nepali market, are the Xiaomi’s Redmi Note 3 and the Redmi 3 Pro. Although the 3GB RAM model of Redmi Note 3 is priced slightly higher than the Canvas 6. But, for the high-performance Snapdragon processors, Adreno 510 GPU, a 16-megapixel camera and a big 4050mAh battery, few thousand rupees are worth the pay. Compared to the Redmi 3 Pro, which is priced similar to the Canvas 6 and has a bigger battery (4100mAh) despite a slightly smaller display, the Micromax Canvas 6 might only attract the big-screen lovers.
Talking about the good parts, the large black band across the phone on the back surrounding the camera adds up to the faintly curved back of the phone, simultaneously giving the design feel of the Huawei Nexus 6P. Though, Micromax is a bit late on including a fingerprint sensor to its phones, the one on the Canvas 6 is a sign of good news that the future phones by Micromax might also have a fingerprint sensor. The new Micromax logo on the back of the phone gives it a clean look.

Certainly, looking at the Canvas 6, it seems that it is not the best smartphone in its segment. But if you are getting a new phone for daily moderate use and have a fixed budget, then Canvas 6 is the phone for you. It will give you value for the money because a phone with similar specifications but a slightly bigger battery and large camera sensor cost twice as much.
Apart from that, if you are upgrading from a phone in the similar segment and want your phone to perform smoothly during and after heavy usages like heavy games, continuous video playback, internet usage, more screen-on time etc., then you might have to rethink on the Canvas 6. But there is no question that adding a few thousand to your budget you will get a phone with better performance, camera, longer battery life, and various other features.
