Anyone who is an IT enthusiast must have heard of NASA’s International Space Apps Challenge (ISAC). ISAC is a two-day hackathon where teams of technologists, scientists, designers, developers and students across the globe collaborate in problem solving with a goal of producing relevant open-source solutions to address the needs applicable to both life on Earth and life in space.
It is one of the world’s largest international annual hackathon taking place over 48-hours in various cities around the world.
International Space Apps Challenge 2016 is back in Kathmandu for the fourth time. It is being organized by International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), under the framework of SERVIR Himalaya, and Alternative Energy Promotion Center (AEPC) in collaboration with YoungInnovations.
The hackathon is supported by Robotics Association of Nepal (RAN), Women Leaders in Technology (WLIT) and CSIT Association of Nepal (CSITAN).
This year, there are 28 challenges in six areas:
- Technology
- Aeronautics
- Space Station
- Solar System
- Earth
- Journey to Mars
The event will be organized on April 23-24, 2016 at Trade Towers Nepal, Thapathali, Kathmandu. Along with these international challenges, participants can also work on the local challenges that will be provided to them during the competition.
International Space Apps Challenge 2015 had 14178 participants from 133 locations involved in 949 projects. Participants from Nepal who developed Tracking and Sensing through Android Robotics won the award for The Most Inspirational. It is a mobile robot platform that is capable of extracting data from nearby objects using on-board sensors present in an Android Smartphone.
ISAC is a great opportunity to learn from and teach others by creating solutions to existing problems of earth and space. The event allows the participants to be a part of an event of international scale. This is also a unique opportunity to talk to experts who are working to incorporate technology in their respective fields.
ISAC is not only for coders but also welcomes beginners, students, experts, engineers, makers, artists and storytellers, anyone who is passionate about problem solving and willing to make a global impact.
