BUILD & DESIGN

The phone comprises of an aluminum metal body. Under the glass, it has a 5.5 inch IPS FHD LCD display which means it has 401 PPI pixel density and on the top, there is a LED notification light, front faced selfie camera, proximity, and ambient light sensor. On the bottom, there is nothing but the Huawei moniker.

The design of the phone gives a pretty good impression. The phone tends to slip away from the hand as it has a slippery metal design, so installing a back cover is recommended. The overall display is very nice as the images on the phone is pretty balanced with accurate colors and also the viewing angles are quite impressive. Also, you can set the temperature of the display to warm or cool to satisfy your preference. Another cool feature of this phone is the eye comfort setting which if you enable, it filters out the blue light to relieve your stressful eyes.

PERFORMANCE

Under the hood, Huawei GR5 2017 is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 655 Chipset with Octa-core processor clocked at 2.1 GHz. The phone has 3 GB of RAM to use with 32 GB of expandable storage. Also,  it is powered by a Mali-T830MP2 GPU. With this said, this phone can handle multi-tasking very easily without any lags.

The gaming experience on this phone is very smooth. Games like N.O.V.A Legacy, Dead Trigger, Real Racing 3 runs very smooth. Although we can see some frames drop, I didn’t encounter any lags while playing games.

Despite all the multi-tasking the phone barely warms up, but when playing heavy games the device seems to heat up a little. The fingerprint scanner does its job very well. A touch of a finger and there you go. The dual speaker is at the bottom of the phone which produces a decent & clear sound although we expected it to be even crisper and louder.

BATTERY

Backing up the phone is a 3340 mAh battery. The same battery from the last year’s GR5. The endurance of this phone is very good, lasting for more than one day on standby even after using battery-draining apps like Facebook, Instagram, and etc.

CAMERA

The dual camera setup has a 12 MP + 2 MP in the back of the body. While playing with the camera I was very impressed with the picture quality. The daylight images are with no doubt very crisp with balanced lights. Indoor pictures are also clear with background light or with the flash. The main function of the dual camera is to take wide aperture photos that can produce images with a shallow depth of field resulting in a nice bokeh effect.

Another feature is the pro camera, where it lets you set your own camera settings. In this feature you can change the ISO, shutter speed, auto focus mode and exposure quality letting you click the pictures according to your need. Also, it has an 8MP front faced camera which does a decent job of clicking a selfie picture.

SOFTWARE

The phone runs on Android V6.0 Marshmallow with EMUI 4.1 theming the phone. The UI is very smooth and comfortable to use. The overall experience with the UI of this phone is excellent. There is no app drawer in this UI like the stock android. Therefore in this UI, all the apps are kept into a single folder on the desktop so you can navigate them easily. The navigation bar drops with two tabs: Notifications and Shortcuts and the default selection is the notification panel.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Well, the phones seem very smooth with the design. With the top-notch specs built in this phone, this device competes with the high-end budget phones. The dual camera setup works like a charm and the phone seems to handle the flood of apps with no lags at all. Maintaining the premium build and a quite impressive dual camera, this device has definitely been a huge upgrade from its last year’s predecessor.

Personally, I would love to use this device as my daily driver. If you are a power user you could opt for a greater battery with the phones from Xiaomi but on overall Huawei GR5 2017 can be the perfect device for you.
