The Himalayan Hydro Expo 2019 is the second iteration of the Hydro Expo organized by Independent Power Producers’ Association – Nepal (IPPAN) and Expo and Event Management Services. Like the Hydro-Expo 2018, Hydro Expo 2019 will be organized at Bhirkutimandap, Kathmandu on January 18, 19, and 20.
The exhibition will see the participation of hydropower developers, solar power developers, equipment manufacturers, financing agencies, insurance companies, consulting firms, contractors, engineers, etc.
The event aims to bring the renewable energy sector of the country together and encourage them to meet the energy development goals of the country. This Expo will also explore the possibility on how building hydro projects in Nepal will be better and affordable given the availability of high volume of water free of cost with abundant rocky hills and gorges for project sites.
Hydro Expo 2019 In-details
The first Hydro Expo attracted 50,000 visitors and was attended by 100 national and international companies. This year, 150 different exhibitions and even more enthusiastic participation of the general public as well as hydropower developers, machine manufacturer and suppliers, and banks and insurance companies.
Hydro Expo 2019 will feature products related to grid-connected solar photovoltaic power systems. The organizers also say that a special arrangement shall also be made for a short visit to various hydropower plants via helicopter. This may not be available to the general public though. So, don’t go there for a free helicopter ride.
The event will host various technical sessions and conduct competitions for engineering students. The technical sessions will cover subjects like innovation in energy generation engineering, construction technology, project management, project financing solution, etc. This might be a great move to encourage youths in the country to search for improvements to be made to the hydropower sector of Nepal.
Nepal nearly totally depends on hydro-electricity for much of its energy use. But this sector is still seriously underdeveloped in Nepal and hasn’t reached its full potential. If Nepal could harness even half of its capacity for the production of hydro-electricity, we could be an energy provider to other countries.
But that’s not the case until today. It has only been a couple of years since we said goodbye to the horrendous powercuts, thanks to some Government officials. We still don’t get the supply of electricity 100% of the times at our homes. This expo aims to provide the momentum needed to expedite the production of hydro-electricity in Nepal and help the government meet the target to produce 15,000 megawatts of energy in the next 10 years. We hope they succeed like they did last year.
