Everest Link, one of the recent internet service providers in Nepal, has now made the internet available at the Everest Base Camp. To provide this service, Everest Link has set up a facility with an investment of Rs 20 million.
Chiring Sherpa, CEO of Everest Link said that they were studying the possibility of internet service at the base camp since 2002. The company, however, started working on it from 2014. He added that this internet service will benefit tourists, hotel entrepreneurs, and porters.
Internet services will now be available in Lukla, Chaurikharka, Khumjung, Khunde, Pangboche, Tengboche, Dingboche. Sherpa said that the internet service has been linked from two/three places so that there won’t be any problems in connectivity.
According to the company, this internet service has been started for the development of the region and for profit. The company has 200 hotels as its stakeholders out of the 250 in the region. All the stakeholders receive 40% of the generated profit. Furthermore, the company has also provided direct employment to 41 people.
Though the service is fast, it is costly as well. The service has a rate of USD 200 for 100mb data and USD 500 for 200mb data. There is a discount of Rs 100 for Nepali tourists on the purchase of any data pack.
Chehang Lama, Chief Technical Officer (CTO) of Everest Link said that the high rate of transportation charge has increased the cost of internet service in the region.
Everest Link will also start providing emergency health service using internet services by coordinating with two hospitals of Kathmandu and a local hospital.
