Facebook launched Lite version of Messenger in 132 different countries on Apr. 27, 2017. The Android version Messenger Lite is now available in more than 150 including Nepal, Germany, Colombia, Italy, Vietnam, Algeria, Morocco, Nigeria, Peru, Turkey, Japan etc. The application was first announced in October for Android users in five countries Kenya, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and Venezuela.
The Messenger Lite consumes lesser memory and processing power compared to the normal version of Messenger. It is mainly targeted to users with low-end hardware devices and users having access to 2G internet network. The application is under 10MB and includes Messenger’s core features like messaging, sending and receiving photos, and links and receiving stickers. However, it does not support the latest features like Messenger Day feature and camera effects.
The launch was announced by David Marcus, Vice President of Messaging Products at Facebook. “If you have an older phone that does not have significant memory or has limited processing power, and you want the benefit of messaging quickly with any of the 1.2+ billion people using Messenger every month, give Lite a try!” Marcus mentioned.
Recently, Facebook also announced that Lite had crossed a huge milestone by crossing over almost 200 million users. The Lite version has many advantages in comparison to its counterparts as it also supports older versions of Android including Gingerbread. The launch of Messenger Lite is certain to attract more audience.
