Huawei released its latest flagship, the Mate 20 Pro, on 2018 November. The phone came preloaded with Huawei’s latest take on Android – EMUI 9. EMUI 9 is Huawei’s skin on top of Android Pie. Though the latest Mate 20 Pro had this update, other Huawei phones were stuck with the previous gen of EMUI. Now, Huawei has announced that EMUI 9 will be coming to 3 other phones – the Mate 10 Pro, P20, and the P20 Pro – this December as a beta version.
Looking at the Mate 20 Pro that we have in our studio right now, EMUI 9 isn’t a radically different update. There may be subtle changes in the animation here and there, some notifications sound may have been tweaked but other than that, it looks like old Huawei skin.
One new feature is the addition of gesture. As Android Pie supports gesture navigation, Huawei has introduced its own version of gestures in EMUI 9. However, you must enable the gesture-based interface from the settings menu. Also, the recents app screen looks a little different. This has got more to do with the change in Android Pie. The apps in the recent app section now scroll horizontally instead of vertically.
A more under the hood improvement is the decrease of items in the settings. From a number of 940, the setting items in the environment of EMUI 9.0 have been reduced by 10% to 843. For example, users can now enable all location services with on touch, instead of enabling GPS, WLAN, and mobile location services separately, streamlining the process and saving time.
Also, Huawei claims smoother performance with this version of EMUI. It says there is a 12.9% performance improvement from its predecessor in the EMUI 9.0.
The major update in the EMUI 9 might be GPU Turbo 2.0, the second generation of Huawei’s software-based graphics processing acceleration technology. GPU Turbo 2.0 can enhance touch controls in games and works in tandem with the App Assistant feature to deliver a smooth, premium mobile gaming experience according to Huawei.
The early registration for updating to EMUI 9.0 beta version is opened to Mate 10 Pro, and P20 users after 18th December, P20 Pro users can get their upgrade registered since 24th December.
The registration can be easily done by following the below steps:
