DJI Mavic 3 Overview

Design and Variants

The DJI Mavic 3 is a folding drone that, similar to its predecessor, can be folded into a compact size. The Mavic 3 is slightly larger than the Mavic 2 Pro, most likely because of slightly larger propellers and longer arms. The camera module is also bigger due to the addition of a telephoto lens and a larger camera sensor.

This time, the DJI Mavic 3 comes in two variants: the DJI Mavic 3 (Standard) and the DJI Mavic 3 Cine. There are no visible distinctions between the two.

The Cine version differs from the ordinary version in that it supports Apple ProRes 422 HQ encoding (max data rate: 3772Mbps) and comes with a 1TB SSD, whereas the standard version only supports H.264/H.265 encoding and comes with 8GB storage.

In addition, the DJI Mavic 3 Cine comes with a DJI RC Pro remote controller rather than the normal RC-N1 remote controller. The RC Pro controller includes a built-in 1000-nit display and up to a 15 km antenna range.

Camera

Talking about the camera, the main camera is made by Hasselblad, a Swedish camera maker. It’s a custom-built Hasselblad camera (L2D-20c aerial camera) featuring a 4/3 CMOS sensor and a 24mm prime lens.

The Hasselblad camera can shoot 20MP still images in 12-bit RAW format and videos in 5.1K at 50fps and 4K at 120fps. It also has a dynamic range of 12.8 stops, an adjustable aperture from f/2.8 to f/11, and 84° FOV.

The telephoto lens, on the other hand, features a 162mm lens with 28x Hybrid Zoom (digital + optical). Unlike the main camera, it has a fixed aperture of f/4.4. The Mavic 3 can shoot in a 10-bit D-Log color profile, enabling the drone to capture up to 1 billion colors.

Flight

The Mavic 3 comes with APAS 5.0 for flight safety, which continuously senses obstacles in all directions and plans safe flying routes to avoid them.

DJI also mentions it will feature upgraded ActiveTrack 5.0, which will allow the Mavic 3, while tracking, to move with the subject as it moves forward, backward, left, right, and diagonally. According to DJI, this feature will be available in January of 2022 through a firmware update.

It also incorporates an upgraded Return To Home (RTH) technology that identifies the shortest, safest, and energy-efficient route back to its home point while also calculating the power required for returning home in real-time based on wind speed and return path.

Furthermore, the DJI Mavic 3 is the first drone that offers a High Frame-Rate Transmission with a 1080p/60fps live feed thanks to the enhanced transmission system, the DJI O3+. It also gives the drone a maximum control range of 15 km in an open area free of interference and obstruction.

Battery

It includes a larger 5000mAh battery, which can last up to 46 minutes in ideal conditions, according to the manufacturer.

It charges via a USB Type-C port. The provided 65W fast charger charges the battery in approximately 96 minutes.
