A total of 1,176 cyber crimes have been registered within the last ten months of the current fiscal year at the Metropolitan Police Crime Division (MPCD). Majority of those cases were related to Facebook, E-mails, Twitter, YouTube, SMS, and ATM.
Why it matters:
- This increase in cyber crimes can be related to the increased access of people to social networking sites. According to MPCD chief, Dhiraj Pratap Singh, the cases have been filed against 54 people, mostly within the age group of 12-45.
- He also said that “37 individuals were taken action for crimes in various social networking sites, two for passport hacking, 11 for issuing threats through SMS, three in fraud cases on fake lottery schemes through SMS and two for character assassination through youtube.”
- Due to the circumstances, Minister for Finance, Dr. Yuvraj Khatiwada, during the budget speech on May 29 had allocated budget for the establishment of a Cyber Crime Control Bureau.
