Cimex Inc., the authorized distributor of BYD vehicles in Nepal, has hinted at plans to introduce the Shark 6 to the Nepali market.

This pickup truck is truly unique. It features a plug-in hybrid powertrain wrapped in a rugged utility Ute design. While Nepal has seen plug-in hybrids and off-roaders before, the Shark 6 combines both in a way that stands out.

To talk a little about plug-in hybrids (PHEVs), they operate like a conventional hybrid but offer the added advantage of external charging. Standard hybrids rely on regenerative braking and the engine to recharge their batteries.

But PHEVs in addition to those battery charging options, also feature a dedicated charging port, much like an electric vehicle. While their battery packs are smaller than those in full EVs, they strike a balance between power and efficiency. The internal combustion engine delivers raw performance, while the electric motor provides instant acceleration and extends the overall driving range.

The Shark 6 is built on BYD’s Dual Mode Off-road (MO) Super Hybrid platform. This advanced architecture integrates a non-load-bearing frame, a structural choice commonly found in pickups.

However, BYD has re-engineered it specifically for hybrid applications, combining it with a tailored off-road chassis for enhanced capability and durability.

Now, let’s have a quick look at the key specifications of BYD Shark 6 in Nepal for 2025.

Design

The BYD Shark 6, also known as a ute in the automotive world, stands out with its wide and boxy design. This rugged pickup truck exudes a strong road presence, making it an appealing choice for both utility and adventure seekers.

At first glance, the massive chrome-finished “BYD” logo dominates the grille, giving the front a striking identity. Flanking the grille, dual projector headlamps integrate with C-shaped LED DRLs that extend across the entire width of the truck.

The bumper features intermediate cladding, while a large skid plate reinforces its off-road-ready stance. Completing the robust front profile, the sculpted bonnet adds to the pickup’s muscular look.

Stretching nearly 5.5 meters in length and standing at about 2 meters in height, the BYD Shark 6 commands attention. Despite its large proportions, the 18-inch alloy wheels appear moderate in size. While the tires work well for urban and highway driving, they might not be ideal for extreme off-roading.

Additionally, the plastic side steps enhance accessibility but lack the rugged durability required for hardcore off-road adventures.

At the back, the Shark 6 features a 790-liter cargo bed which is decent for its segment but not the largest in class. A full-width LED tail light setup mirrors the front-end design, while the bold BYD branding remains consistent throughout.

Inside, the cabin delivers a refined experience with soft-touch materials covering most surfaces. At the center of the dashboard, a massive 15.6-inch Rotating Touch Screen serves as the infotainment hub.

Below it, the central console houses a wireless charging pad with a cooling function, a drive selector, and tactile buttons for ignition, driving modes, hazard lights, and the tailgate release.

The two-spoke steering wheel features physical controls and sits in front of a 10.25-inch Digital Instrument Cluster, complemented by a Heads-up Display.

Performance

The Shark 6 is powered by a 1.5-liter Turbocharged Petrol Engine, complemented by front-mounted 170 kW and rear-mounted 150 kW Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors.

Together, this powertrain generates an impressive 436 PS of max power and 650 Nm of max torque, making the Shark 6 the most powerful vehicle in its class.

It features a 29.58 kWh Blade battery pack that primarily powers the electric motors. This battery can be charged through an external charger, regenerative braking, or even the engine itself. It offers a claimed combined range of 800 km, with 100 km available in electric-only mode. Most of this range comes from the internal combustion engine, which is fueled by a 60-liter fuel tank.

Also, it features an All-Wheel Drive system making it capable of handling varied terrains. Moreover, it can hit a top speed of 160 km/h and can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.7 seconds.

The Shark 6 is built on BYD’s innovative Dual Mode Off-road (DMO) Super Hybrid platform, which plays a pivotal role in its design.

This platform enables BYD to integrate a Front Electric Drive System paired with a 1.5L Turbocharged Engine. Additionally, it features a Rear Motor setup, a 30 kWh Blade Battery pack with Cell-to-Chassis technology, a Charging System, and a Fuel Tank. Moreover, the platform also boasts Dual Wishbone Suspension system.

Combining all of such complex systems harmoniously, from an automotive engineering perspective, is a remarkable achievement.

Additional Details

Double Wishbone handles the suspension duties on both front and rear.

The dimensions are 5457 mm in length, 1971 mm in width, and 1925 mm in height. Moreover, the wheelbase is 3260 mm.

The Shark 6 has a massive ground clearance of 200 mm. And, the kerb weight is 2710 kg.

BYD Shark 6 price in Nepal is not available yet.

It was confirmed that the Shark 6 will eventually make its entry in the Nepali market sometime in the future but the timeline is still a mystery.

If the BYD Shark 6 arrives in Nepal, it will likely compete directly with the Toyota Hilux.

The Shark 6 outshines the Hilux in nearly every category, from performance and features to utility, and even design, which seems outdated on the Hilux.

However, the key difference will likely lie in the pricing. As a plug-in hybrid, the Shark 6 will carry a higher price tag compared to the Hilux. Additionally, the maintenance costs for the Shark 6 will likely be steeper than those for the Hilux.

Despite these factors, for serious ute enthusiasts, the Shark 6 could present a highly attractive option.
