Open source is a concept in computer science in which the source code is made accessible to everyone. Although it has gained a huge popularity in the global Tech community in recent years, most Nepalese people are still unfamiliar with it. With an aim to promote Open Source in Nepal, Automation Research Centre Pvt. Ltd (ARC), in collaboration with Edushala and WLiT, organized Arduino Day Celebration for the first time ever in Nepal.
Arduino is an open source, computer hardware and software company, project, and user community that designs and manufactures microcontroller kits for building digital devices and interactive objects that can sense and control objects in the physical world. The Arduino board started changing to adapt to new needs and challenges, differentiating its offer from simple 8-bit boards to products for IoT applications, wearable, 3D printing, and embedded environments. All Arduino boards are completely open-source.
“Arduino Day” is celebrated worldwide on April 1st where people who have a keen interest in Open source gather in order to share their ideas, experiences and their projects they are working on. The event is organized by the Arduino founders.
The event was conducted on Saturday at Edushala Headquarters, Kupondole. Arduino enthusiasts, students, learners, entrepreneurs, and makers participated in the event. A total of 25 participants took part in the three-hour long event.
The event briefly covered topics about Arduino, projects on Arduino, open source, and its resources, in the first segment. The second segment was an experience-sharing session where participants who are currently working with Arduino, shared their experiences among each other. Also, all the three organizations: ARC, Edushala, and WLiT shared their experience of working in the educational field in Nepal.
The last segment was a discussion round, where participants discussed on how to solve existing local problems with the help of Arduino and how youths can contribute towards the promotion and development. Finally a discussion on the importance of technical innovation in Nepal, its challenges and difficulties marked the conclusion of the event.
