HIGHLIGHTS
- The Z Flip 5 and Fold 5 feature Samsung’s dual-rail hinge.
- The new dual-rail hinge minimizes space between folds and reduces folding stress.
- The hinge is certified by Bureau Veritas for 200,000 folds under normal conditions.
Samsung is one of the largest companies in the world. They are known for innovating in the technological space and also compete with LG and Sony in the display market. As such, anytime a new Samsung flagship is announced, the display is a highlight feature.
While regular panels from Samsung are widely accepted as being the best in class, the story is a bit different with their Fold and Flip lines which use folding displays. Folding displays are soft as they need to fold, and are generally sait to be less durable than traditional panels.
Furthermore, the hinge is a key component in these phones, adding to the list of moving parts in the phone. So, how durable are the new Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5? Let’s find out.
Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 Durability
The Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5 are very similar to their predecessors but are more compact and portable as they feature the Dual-rail Hinge, which helps dissipate external impacts (i.e. when you fumble and drop your phone). They feature the same Aluminum build and come with an IPX8 rating for added protection.
Samsung has also promised 1-time breakage insurance for 1 year which is great to see.

What is the Flex Dual-rail Hinge?
Unlike the old single-axis hinge, the new Flex hinge (Dual-rail hinge) forms a water-droplet-like cavity when folded, which results in a more gentle curve. This means that the display has less stress on it resulting in a smoother crease and the phone is now basically gap-less when shut, reducing the chances of screen damage from dust and lint.
The flex hinge allows for the Z Fold 5 to have the smallest curvature in a phone currently at 1.6R, and 1.9R on the Z Flip 5.
Furthermore, Samsung has collaborated with Bureau Veritas, a French company, that offers testing and inspection certification to check the durability of the phones.
As such, the Fold 5 and Flip 5 are certified for 200,000 folds under 25°C/normal conditions. This means that even if you fold these devices 50 times a day, the devices will remain durable for the next 4,000 days, which is almost 11 years.

How’s the display?
The Fold 5 and Flip 5 now have a 25% stronger display with a shock dispersion layer and dual rail hinge. However, the top layer of the display is still soft and can scratch at level 2 hardness on Moh’s scale of hardness.
As such, Samsung offers 1-time complimentary protective film replacement for buyers to have peace of mind.
Testing the Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5
Samsung has released a video on its youtube channel where they put both the Fold 5 and Flip 5 through the ringer to see their toughness. The video is not very long but we can see that Samsung has tested out the hinge for opening and closing and also checked the IPX8 rating with 2 different water resistance tests.
Furthermore, to check the durability of the phone itself, we are shown a tumble test, a drop test, and even a steel ball test. While all these tests are great and all, Samsung doesn’t explicitly show the results of the tests up close which leaves viewers second-guessing.
In a similar fashion, the video also shows an environmental chamber test, where we assume the phones were tested to cope with extreme cold and heat. You can watch the full video here.
