Huawei Y6s with GMS Launched in Nepal: Does It Stand a Chance Against the Redmi 8?

The Y-series from Huawei are all entry level phones that represent Huawei in the budget segment. Recently, there have been rumors of a new champion joining the series. Strangely, the phone still remains anonymous to the Indian market while its already seen most of the Nepali market by now.

Huawei Y6s, the new addition, has been launched in Nepal today for a price of Rs 14,990 for its basic (3/32GB) variant. This phone in particular faces no restriction whatsoever from Google. Meaning that the phone comes in with Google Mobile Services enabled. So, even with GMS, does stand a chance against the notorious Redmi 8? Well, let’s set that thought aside for a moment and go through the specifications of the Y6s.

Huawei Y6s Specification Layout

The Y6s has a different feel to it when placed alongside other phones of the segment. That’s primary because of its contrasting color configurations. The dual-tone color layout on the rear gives off the pixel like feel off the device that’s pretty appealing.

Do note that it’s just the colors that are differentiating, the overall structure is still made of plastic so it’s not that premium. The phone features just a single camera and Huawei branding to the rear which further presents the minimalistic look of the device.

At 6.09”, the phone is quite large but it is still an IPS LCD panel whose resolution tops out at 720p. And as you’d expect out of a budget device, the punch hole notch cut-out is still there too. Even with the chin still housing the Huawei logo, the phone manages to retain a total of 79.2% screen to body ratio, which is pretty decent, I guess.

Under the glass, we have a MediaTek MT6765 Helio P35 processor powering the entire device. The processor is paired with 3GB RAM next to 32/64GB internals for complete performance. Resting on top of Android 9, we have Huawei’s usual EMUI 9.1 that apparently comes equipped with GMS (Google Mobile Services). This means that you will definitely be able to use the very basic google services without any restrictions.

Towards the rear, there’s just a single 13MP alongside a flash module. I know a greater number of cameras don’t mean everything but I guess an extra depth sensor would’ve been much appreciated for this phone. Over to the front, is another single camera that’s of 8MP.

Finally, powering the entire device is a moderate 3020 mAh battery. The capacity is a bit low than I’d expected but still, the phone should be able to last the entire day with moderate usage. The phone also does not seem to have fast charging to juicing the battery will take a little bit longer.

Initial Impressions

Ok, the specifications of the phone as you’ve seen is pretty okay-ish. For a phone under Rs 15,000, its specifications actually leans slightly towards the favorable region. Overall, the only downside to the phone may be the below average battery capacity the phone offers. In addition, for a low-end processor, dealing with heavy task for a long period of time can be quite power consuming.

And this particular segment is where the Redmi 8 capitalizes a lot. The Redmi 8 houses in a massive 5000mAh battery that additionally comes in with a 18W fast charger. This alone is a reason as to why Redmi 8 is the clear winner.

In addition, the Redmi 8 has managed to configure a dual rear camera setup in the back for extra camera functionalities. Now, performance may not the primary concern for a phone under 15k but all the other pillars matter a lot. The Redmi 8 manages to uphold its status in all 5 major comparing factors for a phone. So, that’s it, the decision is that: no it cannot beat the Redmi 8.
