DJI Smart Controller is an Android-powered handheld remote controller with an integrated display. That’s it. It’s nothing fancy. This controller is especially designed for the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom, DJI’s current flagship entries in the ultra-portable drone market. If you think your smartphone is not good enough to act as your controller then, by all means, buy this pricey slab of plastic. It starts at Rs. 94,900 in Nepal.
Build and Design
The Smart Controller has a clean minimalist design. It is a giant rectangular screen surrounded by some essential buttons. The top corners have one joystick each and between them, there are 5 buttons. There are also two customizable buttons at the side along with two shoulder buttons to capture stills or start recording a video.
The Screen
For one, the controller has a very very bright display. It is a 5.5 inch 1080p LCD panel with 1000nits peak brightness. This is very useful when you are filming something in harsh sunlight. However, people have said that this still doesn’t eliminate glare completely and you’ll have to view your footage under a shade for greater clarity.
Inbuilt storage
Inside the Smart Controller is 16GB of storage which stores cached 720p versions of your videos. This means you can see what you’ve recorded without taking the microSD card out of your drone. However, if you want to have larger storage in your controller itself, there is an option to insert a microSD slot, where you can slot in a 128GB card.
Transmission quality
Another cool thing is that the controller supports OcuSync 2.0 FHD video transmission technology. What this means is that the controller can alternate between 2.4GHz and 5.8 GHz frequency band. This helps reduce the interference of background noise on drone operation and image quality. This also ensures you will get a reliable long-range transmission of up to 8km.
Some bonus feature
The Smart controller also comes with an in-built mic and speakers for features like live streaming. It can also play back video through the HDMI port at 4K 60fps.
The next feature that you’d like to know is its battery life. With a 5000mAh cell inside, DJI claims a battery life of up to 2.5 hrs.
Verdict
Let me tell you right now, for the average user out there who just barely was able to afford his/her drone, this controller is not worth your money. But for people who are serious about this aerial videography and all that, this smart controller definitely provides some improvements over a traditional smartphone. It has been launched at the price of Rs. 94,900. We haven’t seen this product listed on Oliz Store’s page yet but we think it will soon arrive there.
