Game development is a latent occupation in Nepal. There are people who can but most people don’t think the industry will ever take off. Sroth Code Games is a company that thinks otherwise. It is the developer of the upcoming game called Chronicles of the Himalayas. They are actively trying to encourage other developers to pursue a career in this industry. Their latest endeavor is a step in that direction.
Sroth Code Games in partnership with Arch Corporations will be hosting this year’s Global Game Jam Nepal 2019. This will be a 3 days event from 25th Jan to 27th Jan that will take place at M&S Tower, Pulchowk, Lalitpur.
What is Global Game Jam (GGJ)?
The Global Game Jam (GGJ) is the world’s largest game jam event (game creation) taking place simultaneously at various locations around the world. The first Game Jam was held in 2009Â at 53 locations across the globe. During the jam, 1650 participants created 370 games. The 2018 GGJ was held from January 26-28 with 42,811 participants in 108 countries. 8,606 games were made at 803 locations.
Think of GGJ as a hackathon focused on game development. It is an idea that in today’s heavily connected world, participants could come together, be creative, share experiences and express themselves in a multitude of ways using video games – it is very universal.
The weekend stirs a global creative buzz in games, while at the same time exploring the process of development, be it programming, iterative design, narrative exploration or artistic expression. It is all condensed into a 48-hour development cycle. The GGJ encourages people with all kinds of backgrounds to participate and contribute to this global spread of game development and creativity. Everyone from professional game developers to educators to artists and designers are welcome to participate. Once the jam begins, participants come up with game ideas, before pitching those ideas to each other and forming teams to work together on a project.
In the Global game jam Nepal, the motive is not just to develop games but learn from international developers, gain ideas and share knowledge.
All games produced in the GGJ are created under the Creative Commons Non-Commercial Share Alike 3.0 free license, and while they remain the intellectual property of their creators, the Global Game Jam retains the ability to use any game as promotional material. As a part of this and as part of the license, every game is archived, along with source code for many digital games, on Global Game Jam’s website.
