OnePlus 6T Mclaren Edition (10GB RAM + 256GB Storage) Now Available in Nepal at Rs. 99,000

I would like to start this article by stating that I like OnePlus phones and what OnePlus does as a company. But, I have never been a fan of their phone release cycle. When the customers have just settled with their OnePlus 6, OnePlus releases the T version making the 6 already old. Now, when the OnePlua 6T hasn’t even been inside people’s pockets to get a single scratch, OnePlus launched the ‘McLaren Edition‘. It is now available in Oliz Store for Rs. 99,000 only.

When is OnePlus going to let the public rest? Oh, I forgot, their motto is ‘Never Settle’. So, I guess we will have to get used to seeing a new and shiny One Plus phone every 4 months or so.

What McLaren?

That small complaint aside, the McLaren Edition of the OnePlus 6T is one gorgeous phone. Full disclosure: McLaren didn’t build this phone, OnePlus did. They just say that it was inspired by Mclaren and use the Mclaren branding. What did McLaren inspire OnePlus to do? To use Carbon Fiber. Apparently, Mclaren was the first company to use Carbon Fiber in Formula 1.

The design

The back panel of the OnePlus 6T is covered in lightweight carbon fiber and coated in a glossy deep black finish, with papaya orange highlight at the sides that shimmer when you look at the sides at an angle. The papaya orange appears on McLaren’s most recent F1 cars and was widely used by the team in the early 1970s. The design is the most striking difference between the regular OnePlus 6T and the Mclaren edition.

Some hardware changes

While most hardware on the inside like the camera modules and the screen is the same between the McLaren Edition and the regular OnePlus 6T, there are a few exciting differences between the two. I will tell you right now that these upgrades aren’t meaningful or drastic enough to warrant a 30K price jump. Think of the McLaren edition as a collectors item. It just has value because of the McLaren branding. Got it? Okay.

The OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition has 10GB RAM instead of the 6GB/8GB available in the regular old OnePlus 6T. Do you need that extra 2GB RAM? Of Course not. I don’t think any phone will require 10GB RAM even in 2020. Do you know that the Pixel 3 and 3 XL have just 4GB RAM? They run perfectly fine. Android Authority did a speed test between the OnePlus 6, OnePlus 6T, and the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition and all of them completed the tasks at exactly the same time.

The next big hardware upgrade is called the warp charge. OnePlus already had one of the fastest charging time in the smartphone land, now their phone charges even faster. The charger on the McLaren edition can supply 30W of power to the phone without overheating the device. OnePlus claims that you can get 50% of power by charging just for 20 mins. While this sounds cool and all, Dave2D did a video comparing the charging speeds of the original 6T and the McLaren edition 6T where he found that the warp charge is only faster for short bursts of charging. So, if you are charging from 0 to 100% it doesn’t help that much.

Finally

Those are literally the only changes to the phone – A sexier back, larger RAM, and a slightly faster charging times. If you think you want to splurge 30K more for that, go ahead. Afterall, its McLaren. Its a badge of honor. For most people though, they will be perfectly fine with their OnePlus 5T that still runs as smooth as butter.
