Mobile phone imports via Birgunj customs point has increased by more than five times, reports My Republica. As per the statistics of Birgunj Customs Office, 147,005 cell phones entered the country in the first four months of this fiscal year, while only 27,768 mobile phones were imported in the same period last year.
Similarly, the import of several other electronic appliances has soared; as Rs. 858.3 million worth of more electronics entered the country from Birgunj alone than in the previous year.
As compared to last year, the import of air conditioners and telephone through Birgunj has increased by 2,206 units and 11,526 respectively. The import of uninterruptible power supply (UPS) also increased by 19.27 percent as Nepal imported 1.76 million units this year. Similarly, the import of heaters rose by a massive 171 percent.
Likewise, there has been a steep rise in the import of coffee makers as 9,205 units were imported as opposed to 555 last year.
However, in the midst of all this, import of printers from Birgunj has declined this year to 4,231 from the last year’s 7,538 units.
